READY MIXED CONCRETE 2000

It's no great secret that the performance of the construction industry has been flat in recent years, and ready mixed concrete is no exception. After a period of gradual, consistent growth in the early '80s, ready mixed concrete production has tapered off since it's peak year of 1988. Competition from other materials - plastic, steel, wood, asphalt - has grown increasingly fierce.

Early in 1993, a leading industry supplier held a round table disscussion with various ready mixed producers to learn about their perceptions of the current state of the concrete industry. The consensus was very clear: the ready mixed concrete industry is powerful but fragmented. To grow and prosper the participants said, everyone involved - contractors, ready mixed concrete producers, material suppliers, specifiers, equipment manufacturers, affiliated companies and industry associations - must work together to promote concrete as a preferred building material.

In response to these findings, a group of concerned industry representatives met to discuss the situation and concurred that the industry needed a straightforward strategy to survive and thrive. They envisioned an initiative that would foster cooperation, quality and pride. The objective: to make ready mixed concrete the preferred supplier to the construction industry through a customer driven program of superior products and service. Such a program, if embraced by the industry, could propel it into the next century. The visionary program was given an appropriate name: Ready Mixed Concrete 2000 (RMC 2000).

Ready Mixed Concrete 2000 is built upon five guiding principles: integrity, partnership, excellence, innovation and pride. Like most important concepts, these principles only gain meaning when backed up by belief and action.

Six simple, straightforward goals capture the main concepts of the program:

  • The Ready Mixed Concrete Industry will be guided by visionary leadership.
  • We will be a customer driven, service oriented, quality business.
  • We will be viewed by our community as an environmentally responsible industry that operates in a safe and healthy manner.
  • We will create a work environment where our employees are highly trained and empowered to anticipate and respond to customer needs.
  • We will seek to develop and promote successful, mutually beneficial relationships with customers, suppliers, communities and the construction industry.
  • We will create a Ready Mixed Concrete Industry that is successful.

Enthusiasm and support among those involved thus far is running high. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) has formally resolved to support this initiative, as have many state associations. Tarmac, a major driving force in the Ready Mixed Concrete Industry, has given it's full support and cooperation in participating in this initative.
