Roanoke Cement honored for environmental excellence

September 11, 2014 - Roanoke, VA. – Titan America is proud to announce that Roanoke Cement Company (RCC) was recently presented the Overall Environmental Excellence Award from the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and Cement Americas magazine.  The award recognizes the RCC’s performance in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide.

Lance Clark, RCC’s Environmental Manager, accepted the award. “It’s an honor to be supported and recognized by our peers in the cement industry,” stated Clark. “It’s also a testament to our team’s dedication.  Winning the Overall Environmental Excellence Award twice in five years shows we are doing the right things for the right reasons.”

Roanoke Cement is dedicated to environmental stewardship at the plant and within the local community. Multiple examples were cited:  The plant adopted the Catawba Creek that runs through the property and has dedicated a Catawba Creek Clean-Up Day for the last eight years, collecting and disposing of waste collected around the stream.

When the east limestone quarry was expanded, the Troutville plant allotted 98 acres of its land as a riparian buffer, to enhance and preserve the Catawba Creek water quality. They constructed two miles of cattle exclusion fencing along the localized stream bank with plans to plant 16,000 native shrub and trees along a two-mile stretch of the creek.

RCC officials continuously lower plant’s energy consumption in their continued endeavors to be leaders in sustainability and environmental stewardship within the cement industry. Initiatives for achieving future energy reductions include: reducing or eliminating the use of inefficient or unnecessary lighting, maximizing the use of alternative fuels and targeting other cooling fans as candidates for VFD upgrades. In 2013 the Troutville plant was recognized for their commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs by The Wildlife council’s Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification/International Accreditation Program.
